Anger Management Counselling
Anger is a normal response to situations that we perceive as unjust, unfair, or otherwise do not meet our expectations. In the daily experience of living as a human being, these kinds of situations are quite common. Whether we face difficulty in our work lives, challenges at home, or struggle in our everyday lives, anger can show up. Anger can also be a response to situations that have happened in the past that have not been emotionally resolved. Anger tells us that something is wrong and that change is needed - in this sense it is an adaptive emotion. Yet, in expressing our desire for change or dissatisfaction with current circumstance, adaptive anger can easily turn into problem anger. Problem anger can be recognized when we notice ourselves feeling increasingly irritable and on edge or reacting angrily to others on an ongoing basis. Anger is not only a problem when it is expressed outwardly. Internalizing anger and keeping it inside ourselves can be a source of harm and unease as well. Whether you are experiencing difficulties with anger expression towards colleagues, friends, or family, or are struggling with feelings of anger, I can help you move forward.
In anger management counselling I will provide you with skills, tools, and strategies that will enable you to more effectively cope with anger-provoking situations, learn to manage interpersonal conflict, and reduce stress, anger, and tension. This process begins in your first session with me. When we meet, you will be able to let me know how anger is affecting your life and express your goals for our work together. My approach for helping individuals experiencing difficulties with anger typically combines anger processing work to assist in anger relief, strategy building to cope with anger provoking situations, and skills training for anger and affect management. As issues with anger often come along with significant ongoing stress, stress reduction training is often incorporated into this work. Depending on the specific issue you are struggling with and your goals for counselling, I may utilize Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, Mindfulness Training and/or Heartmath Skills to help you experience anger relief.
